Los Angeles, California – In a heart-wrenching incident, a four-year-old boy lost his life when he was shot in front of his parents during a road rage altercation in Los Angeles County. As authorities investigate this tragic event, two suspects, identified as Byron Burkhurt, 29, and Alexandria Gentile, 27, with alleged gang affiliations, have been arrested on suspicion of murder.
According to a statement by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department (LASD), the incident unfolded on Friday night when the victim’s family was driving along Sierra Highway in Lancaster at approximately 7:30 p.m.
Encountering the suspects in traffic, tensions escalated as the suspect driver reportedly cut off the victim’s vehicle and began tailing them through several surface streets, as detailed by the LASD. The situation took a devastating turn when the suspect driver pulled up alongside the passenger side of the victim’s car and opened fire.
“During the incident, the suspect driver cut them off and then began following them through several surface streets. While being pursued by the suspects, the victim driver slowed his vehicle, at which time the suspect driver pulled up along the passenger side of the victim’s car and began shooting,” the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said.
Tragically, a bullet struck the four-year-old child, who was seated in the backseat, leading to his untimely death. The child’s parents, while spared physical harm, faced the heart-wrenching ordeal of rushing their son to a nearby hospital, where he was subsequently pronounced dead.
Suspect Charged With Murder, Held at $5 Million Bail
Hours later, law enforcement was able to locate and apprehend the suspects, thanks to license plate recognition technology. Both suspects, believed to have gang affiliations, have been arrested and booked on murder charges.
In Burkhart’s court appearance, he was charged with one count of murder and two counts of attempted murder. The judge set the bail at $5 million.
Investigations into the incident are ongoing, and crucial details, such as the motive behind the confrontation and any prior connection between the suspects and the victim’s family, remain unclear.
