Weekend road closures are set to impact the Seattle area, with significant lane reductions on southbound I-5 near the Seattle-Tukwila city limits. The closure is part of the “Revive I-5” project by the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT), aiming to address the rugged pavement on the freeway.
The closures will be in effect from 11 p.m. Friday until 4 a.m. Monday, leaving only two lanes open on the left side and potentially causing congestion. This marks the beginning of approximately 13 major construction blockages in the region throughout 2024, spanning from Georgetown to Tukwila.
Despite wintry weather conditions, including rain and snow, the project is proceeding as planned. WSDOT is increasingly incorporating winter road work due to the necessity of tackling major maintenance tasks in the limited warm-weather season.
The construction work involves resurfacing three right lanes after the Boeing Access Road exit, with the adjacent offramp to Highway 900 and the Skyway neighborhood closed. Crews will replace concrete panels and use various methods, including quick-curing concrete and additives, to expedite the pavement repair process. The work will proceed even in the presence of rain, as long as temperatures stay above freezing.
Motorists are advised to use alternative routes to minimize rear-end crash risks and potentially find quicker alternatives. Suggestions include using the Highway 99 toll tunnel from North Seattle or Highway 599 for West Seattle and South Park drivers. Those from Snohomish County or northeast Seattle can divert to southbound I-405 and rejoin I-5 near Southcenter.
Other notable closures and detours in the region include the closure of several Sound Transit light rail stations due to trackwork, the temporary closure of the Highway 520 walk-bike trail across Lake Washington, and maintenance on I-90 through Snoqualmie Pass.
Additionally, eastbound I-90 will close across Lake Washington from 11 p.m. Friday until 6 a.m. Saturday for routine maintenance in the Mount Baker Tunnel and under Mercer Island lids. Northbound I-405 from Totem Lake Boulevard to Northeast 160th Street will also experience a complete closure from 11:59 p.m. Saturday until 6 a.m. Sunday.
