Severe flooding on Monday caused a major disruption on the northbound lanes of Interstate 15 near 32nd St., leading to a prolonged standstill for several miles. Caltrans crews were deployed to address the issue, spending hours working to clear storm drains that had become clogged due to the heavy rain. Frustrated drivers were stuck in their vehicles as emergency crews arrived on the scene around 12:45 p.m.
At approximately 1:30 p.m., about 10 Caltrans workers were observed wading through waist-deep water on the freeway, focusing on unclogging storm drains to alleviate the flooding. Some drivers, undeterred by the flooded conditions, attempted to pass through the affected area.
The situation began to improve around 4 p.m., with traffic starting to flow freely near Imperial Avenue and Market Street. However, as of 4:15 p.m., the left lane at Main Street remained blocked, though all other lanes had reopened. The rain had momentarily ceased around that time.
In the aftermath of the flooding, the cleared stretch of the freeway revealed mud and debris, including tree limbs, making the road hazardous for drivers. California Highway Patrol Public Information Officer Jake Sanchez emphasized that standstills on one freeway can have a cascading effect, impacting the flow of traffic on other nearby freeways.
The incident serves as a reminder of the challenges posed by severe weather conditions and the efforts required to mitigate their impact on transportation infrastructure.
