Lanes on northbound Interstate 805 near Clairemont Mesa have been reopened following a tragic incident in which a pedestrian was struck and killed. The incident occurred on Monday morning and was reported by two separate callers. According to the California Highway Patrol (CHP), the pedestrian was initially seen on northbound I-805 at around 4:37 a.m. Less than 30 minutes later, another caller reported that the pedestrian had been struck.
The victim, an unidentified individual, was fatally injured in the incident and was pronounced dead at the scene. The CHP has not released the victim’s name pending notification of their next of kin.
The accident involved two vehicles. A 36-year-old woman from San Diego, driving a white Mazda CX-5, attempted to avoid the pedestrian by swerving but still collided with him. Subsequently, the pedestrian was struck by another car, a silver Lexus IS250, driven by a 50-year-old man from San Diego. Both drivers remained at the scene and cooperated with the CHP’s investigation. Fortunately, neither of the drivers sustained any injuries.
CHP reported that neither of the drivers was under the influence of alcohol or drugs at the time of the incident, but a toxicology report is pending to confirm whether substances played a role in the crash. The exact cause and timeline of the accident are still being investigated.
As a result of the incident, all lanes on northbound I-805 south of Clairemont Mesa Boulevard were initially closed. One lane was opened for traffic diversion off Clairemont Mesa Blvd around 6 a.m., causing significant traffic congestion that stretched back to the Interstate 8 interchange by 6:30 a.m. Two lanes were eventually reopened by 10 a.m., with the full reopening of all lanes occurring around 11 a.m.
CHP Sgt. Robert Holtz took the opportunity to remind people to drive cautiously during the Christmas season, emphasizing the importance of driving at safe speeds, wearing seatbelts, and following traffic laws.
